Your Capability Statement is More Than...

Recently, I had the opportunity to facilitate a workshop on capability statements and their role in government procurement. One thing I emphasized is that your capability statement should do more than list what your business does—it should make it easy for a procurement professional, prime contractor, or potential partner to understand why your business is worth considering in 10 seconds or less. Because let's be honest, if they don't see something in 10 seconds that grabs their attention, they're on to the next one.

In government contracting, opportunities can move quickly. Your capability statement is often one of the first tools used to introduce your business, communicate your qualifications, highlight relevant experience, and demonstrate your readiness to do the work.

A strong capability statement should answer a few essential questions:

  • Who are you?

  • What do you do?

  • When have you performed relevant work?

  • Why you over everyone else?

  • How can a buyer or partner engage you?

But having a capability statement isn't enough. It needs to be clear, targeted, current, and aligned with the types of contracts and opportunities you're pursuing.

That's why capability statement development is an important part of procurement readiness at Cogency. We help businesses move beyond simply having a document to developing a strategic tool that supports their larger government contracting goals.

Your capability statement may open the door. Your strategy, readiness, and ability to deliver help determine what happens next.
